Contemporary flute for Lunchtime Concert

Melanie Walters is an Adelaide-based flautist who specialises in contemporary music with a focus on Australian composition. The lunchtime performance will be shaped by Ms Walters’ interest in aleatoric works and free improvisation.

An accomplished musician, Ms Walters recent performances include playing Lowell Liebermann’s Concerto for Flute with the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, and The Flute Revamped: a solo Adelaide Fringe show which received a 5-star review in The Advertiser.

Ms Walters was a fellow at the 2014 Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival and is half of new music duo Stereo/Mono. Currently a member of the COMA New Music Ensemble and principal flute of the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, she has also performed with many other ensembles including the Soundstream Collective and Chronology Arts.

She has completed a PhD in the performance of flute music by German-Australian composer Felix Werder, and a Master of Music in the performance of late 20th century Australian flute music. She was the recipient of the 2012 Naomi Cumming Postgraduate Student Prize and the 2013 Elder Conservatorium Postgraduate Prize for Research Excellence, and was a University of Adelaide finalist in the 2013 Three Minute Thesis competition.
