Exceptional engagement with environmental future

Nearly 400 ideas for a more sustainable future on campus were received during the consultation period for Flinders’ draft sustainability plan. With three popular themes emerging in the wonderful responses, feedback is now being incorporated by the sustainability team to finalise an achievable plan.

The draft plan, Bold ideas, Brighter Future, was released for input from the Flinders community in July 2018 and sparked an enthusiastic conversation on sustainability and how the University could reduce its carbon footprint.

Over the following weeks, a range of creative, innovative and bold ideas were submitted, with the most popular themes emerging as resource recovery, energy and emissions, and water.

Feedback included ideas on recycling, composting, harvesting water, reducing food waste, using less electricity, reducing plastics, vegan and vegetarian food options, through to suggestions on increasing renewable energy use through solar panels and alternative transport options.

The sustainability team would like to thank everyone who shared their ideas. All feedback is greatly appreciated and all ideas – no matter how small, or bold – are being taken into consideration.

The final plan will be endorsed by the University prior to its release in 2019. Staff can keep an eye on the sustainability website for further details.
