Alumna embraces Antarctic opportunity

Flinders alumna Amelia Tandy has been selected as part of the fourth Homeward Bound contingent, an ongoing international program that aims to develop a 1000-strong network of women with backgrounds in STEMM studies to contribute to positive change.

For 2019, Ms Tandy and the Homeward Bound cohort will focus on a global 12-month leadership initiative culminating in an expedition to Antarctica at the end of this year.

After studying marine biology at Flinders University, Ms Tandy applied for NGO positions in South Africa and in the Netherlands through AIESEC, an international student organisation that seeks to build cultural understanding through graduate exchanges. Upon returning to Australia, she joined the public service and has worked on marine policy for the last 12 years, currently as Program Support Officer for CSIRO in Canberra.

Her keen interest in the interaction of science and policy will be bolstered by her involvement in Homeward Bound, which she hopes will help her to improve environmental policy in Australia.

Fellow Flinders alumni are helping to organise fundraising events to support her Homeward Bound commitment. Details of Ms Tandy’s fundraising project are outlined on her Chuffed website page.
