New stream of outdoor studies commences

The College of Education, Psychology and Social Work has launched an Outdoor Adventures topic as part of a new outdoor education stream offered in the Bachelor of Sport Health and Physical activity.

Some students undertaking the topic are in in their second year of a three year degree, while others from psychology and tourism are also picking up the course as part of their elective pathway.

Over three days during Orientation Week, members of the new cohort went kayaking and achieved their basic skills certificates, with many participants also nominating themselves for further training by achieving a flat water skills accreditation through paddle Australia.

The aim of the topic is for students to engage with adventure, understand its importance, analyse its impact and advocate for its inclusion in a range of contexts.

Lecturer in Health, Physical and Outdoor Education Joss Rankin partners with a number of outdoor education professionals to run similar activities, including climbing and abseiling.

Students are taught to be safe, aware, respectful, competent and ethical participants in a range of outdoor and adventurous pursuits.
