Hotel Mumbai confronts and excels

The feature film debut of Flinders alumnus, writer and director Anthony Maras, is now screening in Australia to rave reviews and lively discussion on its timely and challenging topic.

Filmed in India and South Australia, Hotel Mumbai follows the harrowing events at the Taj Palace Hotel during the 2008 terrorism attack.

Together with directing the film, Mr Maras also wrote the screenplay. He discusses his approach to the subject in a trailer, including filming overseas, the documentary that inspired the feature and rehearsals.

Starring Dev Patel and Armie Hammer, the film opened in Australian cinemas 14 March 2019 and has been the subject of much discussion and debate, particularly in light of the timing of release and its courageous tackling of a confronting subject.

Reviewers have commented on its “water-tight script” and directing including” Maras hardly puts a foot wrong”. The film has received a 78% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mr Maras graduated from flinders in 2003 with an Honours Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice degree.
