Enhanced security for uni accounts

An additional security measure known as multi-factor authentication will be implemented for Flinders FAN accounts, as protection from frequent attempts to compromise the security of staff and University information.

MFA protects your account by requiring, on occasion, an addition piece of information to verify your identity. For most staff, this will involve using the Okta mobile application (“Okta Verify”) on your smartphone which will occasionally ask you to verify your Okta login through the press of a button. Other options are available for those without smartphones or unable to use them for this purpose.

Cyber threats and breaches are increasing around the world, and IDS takes the protection of staff and University information very seriously. As with organisational user accounts in any sector, Flinders’ FAN accounts are regularly targeted for cyber attack and account compromises do occur.

MFA will be rolled out in phases over the next three months to all staff. When it’s your turn, you will receive an email with your MFA activation date and instructions on how to register.

Staff with questions are welcome to contact the Identity and Access Management Team.
