Inspired by hands-on biomechanics class

The Medical Device Research Institute at Tonsley hosted high school students as part of National Biomechanics Day on Wednesday 10 April. This world-wide initiative  celebrates biomechanics and allows participants an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in laboratories.

Two events at Tonsley were designed for students interested in science and engineering, with particular reference to how the discipline is applied to the human body.

Students from Aberfoyle Park High School and the Australian Science & Mathematics School attended workshops held by staff and PhD researchers, to learn about biomechanics topics including the mechanics associated with fixing tibial fractures (in the biomechanics and implant laboratory) and ground reaction forces (in the gait lab).

Students also received future study and career information.

Biomedical Engineering PhD candidate Dhara Amin says the day enabled students and school teachers to learn about the importance of biomechanics.

“It was a great day and we had two workshops setup here at Tonsley for the students. Biomechanics Day is a movement that started in the USA and has now gone international and Flinders University is the first SA institution to take part,” says Ms Amin.
