The future of transport and mobility

An event on 14 August in partnership with the Department of Premier and Cabinet will explore future transport – including the latest technology, regulatory issues and cutting-edge projects currently underway.

Topics and presenters

Future Mobility: A New Paradigm (Associate Professor Tania Leiman)

Emerging technologies such as automated cars, marine vessels, trains and drones pose new questions regarding liability, data privacy, corporate responsibility and regulation. Changing business models (transport as a service, ride share, usage based insurance) and the growth in smart cities and connected infrastructure all have potential to significantly impact existing legal frameworks. This topic will deliver an overview of the regulatory framework and the legal implications and challenges of the changing face of mobility.

Future Transport: Innovation and Technology Adoption
(Associate Professor Giselle Rampersad)

Three key innovations are impacting transport – autonomy, connectivity and energy. From consumer cars and public transport to defence, mining, construction, agriculture and advanced manufacturing, the performance, reliability and safety of technology are key factors driving use. Considerations include adoption and acceptance, and whether use transports or replaces people.

From performing a critical defence mission with autonomous submarines and drones, to industrial settings using automated vehicles in the shipyard and factories, policies need to evolve including transport and the future of work.

Future Mobility: Trialling Innovation in Transport (Joanne Murray, Manager, Strategic Projects, Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)

New forms of mobility and innovative transport services are reshaping the way people and goods move in cities and regions around the world.

The South Australian Government is embracing new transport services and trialling new technologies to improve people’s everyday experiences. New forms of mobility technology will enable safer and more efficient transport options and SA is taking a leadership role as the first state to enact legislation for on-road trials and the development of advanced automotive technology. It was also first to establish a Future Mobility Lab. This presentation will provide a snapshot on some of the key projects.
