Staff are invited to wear something purple this Friday 30 August in support of LGBTIQ+ youth. The occasion will be celebrated at Flinders with fun in the plaza – possibly involving dancing dinosaurs – together with events and fundraising through the sale of purple ribbons.
Wear it Purple Day is an initiative of Minus18, a youth-driven charity that champions LGBTIQ+ young people in Australia. Purple ribbons will be sold at a stall in the plaza at Bedford Park (also at IDS reception, Physical Sciences building 014) to raise funds for the organisation’s important work.
Staff are invited to wear a ribbon or anything purple to signal support for LGBTIQ+ young people.
Each year schools, workplaces and organisations across Australia get together to show their support.
Why get involved?
75% of LGBTIQ+ youth in Australia will be bullied because of their identity. 80% will experience this at school. Consequently these young people are up to 12 times more likely to experience depression and up to five times more likely to experience anxiety.
