Capital and road works around campus

A number of works are underway around Flinders’ southern campuses as the property team oversees footpath repairs, market garden works and electrical updates; while Darlington roadworks will necessitate closure of a section of South Road this weekend.

Footpath repairs – Bedford Park and Sturt

A suite of footpath refurbishment projects are taking place around Bedford Park, Sturt and Flinders Living to repair damaged and worn out pathways. The works have been scheduled to keep the impacts on staff, students and visitors to an absolute minimum. Where works are being undertaken adjacent to roadways, traffic management teams will be in place.

Please be aware there will be some noise and pedestrian diversions associated with these works. Staff and students are asked to follow all directional signage in place and where possible, avoid these areas while works are underway. The program of works noting the footpath locations is provided below (together with map at left.)

Staff are thanked for their patience during these essential repair works to improve Flinders. If you have any queries, please contact PFD on 8201 2733 or email pfd@flinders.edu.au.

Market Garden

As part of Flinders’ sustainability initiatives, work is continuing in our Market Garden near McHughs. Recent plantings are growing and the fruit trees are coming along well. New furniture and planting beds have been added to continue to enhance the garden. The artwork on the container is continuing until the end of the year.

Next week, a new potting shed is being constructed to provide shade and weather protection. There may be some intermittent noise associated with this work.

Flinders Link – Weekend road closure Main South Road (southbound) surface occurring 6 December to 9 December

With works progressing on the Flinders Link Project, steel girders are required to be installed across Main South Road and the lowered motorway to form the base of the elevated bridge deck.

Between 8pm on Friday 6 December, to 6am on Monday 9 December 2019, the Main South Road (southbound) surface road between Sturt Road and Flinders Drive will be closed.

A detour for Main South Road (southbound) traffic will be in place via Sturt Road and Marion Road. The Southern Expressway will remain operational with southbound traffic required to enter at the Marion Road ramp. Access will still be maintained at the Flinders Drive on ramp for access to the lowered motorway.

Access for emergency services vehicles will be maintained throughout the weekend closure, as well as access across the Flinders Drive Bridge.

20 steel bridge girders, ranging in length between 30 – 50 metres, will form the 10 spans to be installed as part of the project. Each span requires two steel girders to be lifted into place using two cranes which are then placed on top of the piers and abutments to form the base of the bridge deck.
