In touch with… Dave Mannix

Dave Mannix manages a team of eight to ensure spaces at Flinders University are set up for smooth operations. From major events to office moves, changing light-bulbs or materials removal or installation, it’s a behind-the-scenes role that plays a leading part in the University’s success.

What is your role at Flinders University?

I’m the senior caretaker at Flinders University. My team is responsible for a wide range of duties including office moves, teaching space set ups and function space set ups. We work closely with the numerous events teams across campus to transform spaces to meet their needs. Some of these include open days, graduations, exams…the list goes on.

I have been in this role since 2017 and have been very fortunate to work with a great team that can handle all the pressure and challenges that come our way. I began at Flinders in 2006 as a casual working some of the events with the services team, and as a bag room attendant through the examinations period. I was offered a short term contract in the caretaking team in 2007 and after roughly 12 months became a permanent member. I have been seconded to a number of roles within property, facilities and development but have always found my way back to the caretaking team.

Can you share one of your biggest challenges?

I think the biggest challenge the caretaking team has faced is gaining visibility and recognition. Our work has always been in the background, not always seen and certainly not always seen as glamorous. However, with a new management team, new work systems that capture everything we do and the relationships we have created with the wider University community, this has certainly changed for the better and the hard work my team put in daily has certainly been appreciated.

And what would be one of  your proudest moments?

I have two daughters, nine and 11 years old and a beautiful wife. Watching my girls grow and looking at the life my wife and I have built makes me very proud.

What are some of the things you enjoy in your spare time?

My passion is music; I play guitar, drums and a little piano and have been playing since primary school. I have played in numerous bands and duos and when time allows would really love to start playing at a semi-professional level again.

I enjoy playing basketball, I have been playing my whole life and have a great group of mates I do this with.

My wife and I love home renovations, we always have a project on the go or at least one in planning.

My family and I love travelling. We have been to the USA on two occasions and spent time with other family members in Bali not too long ago. We are looking forward to doing more travelling as soon as circumstances allow.
