Media masterclass for researchers

Having been rescheduled, Science in Public is hosting its first media and communication masterclass in Adelaide for 2021 at the South Australian Museum from 9am to 5pm on Thursday 18 March.

The intensive full-day course gives researchers the opportunity to meet local journalists, hear how they find news and learn how to ensure their research is reported accurately. After discussing specific research with journalists from television, print and radio, the researchers can practice being interviewed and get feedback.

Experienced science communicators will work with you to find the narrative in your research and keep it accurate. You will get help to convey the complexity of your research into a 10-second grab for the media, or one-minute elevator pitch to funders.

Director of Media and Communication Karen Ashford says the Science in Public media training course has a solid reputation and may be a useful supplement to Flinders media training, especially for those researchers wanting to strengthen their presentation skills by practising with reporters from a range of local media outlets.

Bookings for this course, which cost $800 +GST per person, can be made online. For further details, email sarah@scienceinpublic.com.au or phone Science in Public Managing Director Sarah Brooker on  0413 332 489.

Meanwhile, the Flinders media team offers regular training sessions during the year, can tailor bespoke training for research disciplines, and is available for short notice coaching for specific media opportunities. Contact the team at newsdesk@flinders.edu.au
