Call to reveal the history of Dunstan photos

As a part of SA History Month, the Don Dunstan Foundation and Flinders University is presenting Don Dunstan’s Photos: Help Us Fill in the Blanks! – a special photographic exhibition that aims to unlock vital historical memories through public reaction to unidentified photographs.

The exhibition – being held on Level 1 of Flinders Victoria Square between 9.30am and 4pm on Thursday 13 May – presents a selection of photographs of the late Don Dunstan, the former SA Premier who introduced great political and social change from the early 1970s. These images come from his personal collection that he kindly donated to the Flinders University Library but sadly, many photos within this collection are without full descriptions of the people or events depicted.

To help fill these gaps in information, the Don Dunstan Foundation is helping the Flinders University Library to complete as many photo descriptions as possible – but they need help from the general public. “We are asking members of the public to please come and view a display of some of these photos, to be reminded of the significance of the Dunstan era, and let us know if you recognise a person, location or event within them,” says Ritchie Hollands, Executive Director of the Don Dunstan Foundation.

“Our hope is that the input of people viewing the exhibition will fill in the gaps in the historical knowledge on the people, places and events depicted in these photos, about which we have little to no information.”

This exhibition is part of a wider project the Don Dunstan Foundation is undertaking during 2021 to enrich the knowledge of the contents of about 1200 photos in the Dunstan Collection within the Flinders University Library.

More information about the event can be found online.
