Murchland fund ensures Indigenous support

The Indigenous Medical Books Fund is an initiative of the Murchland family, who have a Christmas tradition of pooling together the money they would previously have spent on presents for each other, to instead support Indigenous education.

Each year the fund supports the cost of medical books for Indigenous students studying at Flinders University.

This year, the family decided to give an extra $250 to every Indigenous medical student in SA and the NT – which resulted in 19 students recently receiving a surprise boost to their studies.

One of the recipients is Amy Hughes, a fourth-year Doctor of Medicine student, who has a very specific use for her gift. “As I’m studying in my final year of a medical degree, I have been looking to get one book in particular – Kumar and Clark Clinical Medicine. This text has been recommended to me by many consultants, particularly as I am interested in exploring internal medicine further as a career path. I will now be able to purchase the book and have online access as well – so I can’t be more thankful.”

Anyone can donate to the Fund, which provides a practical way to ease the cost of study and provide encouragement to the recipients. Click here to find out how to make your donation.
