Graduates come together to celebrate

After a pause in graduation ceremonies because of COVID-19, the Flinders community was delighted to be able to come together in person to celebrate the achievements of graduates – with a twist – at the Adelaide Convention Centre last week.

The Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and senior University staff welcomed approximately 2000 graduates from all six Flinders University colleges, who crossed the stage over the three day event.

Notably, graduates had already been sent their testamur to avoid the need for physical contact during the ceremony, a change that Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling told the audience was necessary to observe COVID-19 regulations.

“These celebrations come after a year when we have all been confronted with unprecedented challenges – and, commendably, we have risen to meet and overcome great difficulties,” said Professor Stirling.

“It has been a time for the strong to take positions of leadership – and it is here that we can all be justly proud of everyone associated with Flinders University.”

He also applauded the graduates for their years of hard work. “Your achievement reflects Flinders University’s exacting standards of academic rigour and excellence, underlining our global reputation for quality research and teaching, and the benefits these deliver to our communities.”

Graduation Celebration Events were held to acknowledge graduates from:

• College of Science and Engineering, social work courses from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, and Nursing and Midwifery courses from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences on Wednesday 12 May.

• College of Medicine and Public Health, and Education and Psychology courses from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work on Thursday 13 May.

• College of Business, Government and Law, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and Health Sciences courses from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences on Friday 14 May.

Chancellor Stephen Gerlach AM encouraged the graduates to realise the enduring value of their Flinders University education. “As you finalise this chapter of your life at Flinders, be proud that you are part of a global community of more than 100,000 alumni, who are changing the world through integrity, courage, innovation and excellence,” said the Chancellor. “The inspiration provided by such dedicated leaders and brave minds serves to underline that Flinders University is never complacent and always striving to progress.”

The Chancellor also recognised changes to this year’s event to keep in line with the current COVID-19 regulations, but emphasised the great value that the Flinders community places on such celebrations. “Now is the time to fully celebrate the significance of your achievement, and draw enormous satisfaction from your success,” he said.

These ceremonies were significant and memorable occasions for the graduating students, their families and associates, as they celebrated the culmination of many years of hope, aspiration and hard work. Students also appreciated seeing many of their teachers, advisors, supervisors and mentors at the celebration events.
