Seed grants for vegan-friendly foods

Projects ranging from measuring sleep rhythms to developing vegan-friendly foods from South Australian seaweed are among successful applicants in the latest round of Flinders University Innovation Partnership Seed Grants.

The eight successful projects have received a total of $529,250 in combined funding helped by industry partners (including $128,800 in-kind support), with $163,500 provided by Flinders.

Associate Professor Munish Puri from the College of Medicine and Public Health leads a team that has received $163,487 in partnership with Nourish Ingredients ($25,000 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Sustainable production of single cell oil rich in Arachidonic acid (ARA)’.

Professor Wei Zhang from the College of Medicine and Public Health leads a team that has received $53,950 in partnership with Australian Kelp Products ($25,000 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Scoping Study for Developing Vegan Friendly Functional Foods/Ingredients for Global Market from South Australian Seaweeds’.

A team of SWIRLS researchers (Kate Seymour, Professor Sarah Wendt, Carmela Bastian and Kris Natalier) has been awarded a $72,000 grant to support a research partnership with OARS Community Transitions in SA ($25,000 from Flinders). The project, titled ‘Developing an innovative response to domestic and family violence: Accommodating perpetrators as a strategy for change’, will contribute to the development of innovative domestic and family violence (DFV) practice and policy in SA.

Dr Hannah Scott from the College of Medicine and Public Health leads a team that has received $96,800 in partnership with Compumedics ($25,000 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Measuring sleep and circadian rhythms from the forehead: Validation of the Somfit Device’.

Professor Jamie Quinton from the College of Science and Engineering leads a team that has received $75,000 in partnership with CDU, Defence ($25,000 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Understanding the Influence of Processing on the Material Properties and Corrosion Performance of Cold-Spray 3D Printed Materials for Defence Applications’.

Dr Deidre Morgan from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences leads a team that has received $26,000 in partnership with Allied and Scientific Health Office, SA Health ($13,000 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Mapping community palliative care patients’ assistive equipment needs and the impact of NDIS, MAC and APER on occupational therapy interventions to optimise function’.

Professor David Lewis from the College of Science and Engineering leads a team that has received $35,000 in partnership with QBE ($12,500 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Fundamental Approaches to Broaden the Storage Range for a Novel Blood Warmer’.

Professor Stacey George from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences leads a team that has received $26,000 in partnership with SA Health Allied Health and Scientific Office ($13,000 from Flinders) for a project titled ‘Improving outcomes for patients experiencing long waiting time on Specialist Outpatient Department clinics through redesign’.

Meanwhile, in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work Dr Sam Elliott and Professor Murray Drummond have been awarded an out-of-round grant with a partnership with the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, for the project ‘A multi-sport investigation of parent engagement practices in youth sport’.

  • Applications for the 2021 Innovation Partnership Seed Grants (IPSG) are now open, aiming to encourage more engagement with partner organisations.

The IPSG provides funding of up to $25,000 (GST exclusive) for a project, provided that an equivalent or greater cash contribution is committed by the external partner organisation(s).

There will be two deadlines for 2021 applications – 30 August and 1 December – with the application portal remaining open until 1 December. Applications submitted before each deadline will be evaluated and a decision advised.
