Students to use multi-factor authentication

To protect student identity and reduce Flinders University’s cyber risk, multi-factor authentification (MFA) will be introduced to all student accounts in 2021.

A phased rollout of MFA is in progress, with students able to opt-in to use MFA at any time. Some services such as Virtual Apps and VPN require mandatory MFA use.

As Semester 2 begins, the rollout will accelerate, with an aim to have MFA enabled on all remaining student accounts by the end of September 2021.

Students will receive a number of direct emails to prepare them for the MFA introduction and provide advance notice of the change to their FAN account access. The IDS Identity and Access Management team is working closely with Student Experience, Flinders Connect and the IDS Service Desk teams to ensure student communications and support is coordinated.

How can you help?

You can encourage students to set up MFA early. Students can sign up and enable MFA on their Flinders FAN account at any time – they just need to follow guidance on the students.flinders.edu.au/mfa web page.

What happens if a student needs support and approaches you?

Students can be directed to a range of support options:

  • Self-Help Tool on the MFA Support page. This provides answers to many questions, including links to re-register MFA on your account in, how to set up a new MFA device or request a temporary MFA bypass when you need emergency access but do not have access to your MFA device. It also contains a list of resources including a list of guides.
  • In-person – at Flinders Connect in the Bedford Park campus during regular business hours.
  • By phone – calling the IDS Service Desk during opening hours (Monday to Friday: 8am to 5:30pm) on 08 8201 2345 or logging a request for IT Help and Support.
