Celebrating success

Research into child protection receives state-wide recognition, while other successes include a national podcast audience for Associate Professor Alice Gorman and a new UK documentary featuring a COVID-19 expert.

Associate Professor Alice Gorman

Associate Professor Alice Gorman (AKA Dr Space Junk), from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, is joined Karlie Noon and Corey Tutt on the ABC podcast Cosmic Vertigo, to discuss the mysterious rock that appeared in our solar system in 2017 (~11 minute mark).

Associate Professor Gorman also appeared on James Carleton’s podcast God Forbid to discuss the ethics and laws surrounding today’s space race and to examine the broader space industry.

Child protection research recognised 

Dr Carmela Bastian and Professor Sarah Wendt from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work have been announced as finalists in the SA Child Protection Awards for their research into child protection.

The awards are presented by the Department for Child Protection (DCP) in partnership with the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN).

Winners will be announced at the SA Child Protection Awards Breakfast on Wednesday 8 September, held during National Child Protection Week (5-11 September) and the event will also acknowledge the invaluable role of family-based carers and volunteers.

UK documentary explores the origins of COVID-19

Professor Nikolai Petrovsky

Professor Nikolai Petrovsky from the College of Medicine and Public Health joined other COVID-19 experts in the Channel 4 documentary, Did COVID leak from a lab? to discuss complex “gain of function” (GOF) research, and the origins and transmission of the virus. Did COVID leak from a lab? was aired by Channel 4 in the UK on Sunday night.
