‘I want to be a Scientist’ features scientists from Flinders University

Associate Professor Charlie Huveneers, from the College of Science and Engineering, and Mr Darryl Sellwood, from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, are among scientists highlighted in a new children’s book that has been released, just in time for Christmas.

I want to be a Scientist profiles some of South Australia’s best scientists, and outlines the many different types of scientists who work in different settings. From studying nature to the human body, the scientific areas featured in the book are presented to encourage young children to follow their interests and dive deeper into the world of science. Herniation talk is best in show

The Spine Society of Australia recently held its 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting, and a Flinders researcher’s work was awarded best in show. Mr Michael Russo was awarded The Clayton Adam Award, a $1,000 prize awarded annually to the best paper presented at the Scientific Meeting by a junior research scientist. Mr Russo was recognised for his excellent presentation and responses to questions on his project titled “Lumbar Disc Herniation Failure After Simulated Multiaxial Repetitive Lifting” by Michael P Russo, Daniel Ciric, Dhara B Amin and John J Costi.

Dementia care paper wins national award

Dr Monica Cations

Dr Monica Cations from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work has received an award from the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand, with her paper “Using data linkage for national surveillance of clinical quality indicators for dementia care among Australian aged care users” being the ECR category winner of the HSRAANZ Best Health Services and Policy Research Paper of the Year Award. Her award was announced at the virtual HSRAANZ end-of-year event which was held via Zoom on 2 December, during which Dr Cations was able to speak about her award winning paper.
