R U Ok? to spark a conversation

Thursday 8 September is R U Ok? Day, a national day of action when Australians are encouraged to stay connected and, if they are able, to reach out and support those who may be struggling.

This year has continued to see significant challenges and hardships affecting people around the world, so now it is especially important to reach out and stay in touch with those around you. Supporting your friends, family and peers can be as simple as asking if they are OK – a small act that can have a large impact on someone who is struggling.

To help spread the message of the importance of reaching out, Oasis and the Flinders University Student Association are hosting an event in the Hub and Plaza at Bedford Park between 11am and 2pm. Join the team for a day of free goodies, music, giveaways, meaningful conversation and Good Vibes. Look out for the Wellbeing Ambassadors to chat about how to ask people if they are ok, and about the range of support available to Flinders students.

The R U OK? website has many resources and tips on how to start this conversation and stay connected, because when we’re connected with each other, we are better protected from personal distress. The website also includes information about how to look for signs that someone is not OK, tips for listening and showing support, and strategies for what to do if someone says they are not OK.

It is also a reminder to check in with yourself, and ask if you are OK. If you are going through difficult times and need further support, please remember that all Flinders University staff can access the Employee Assistance Program at any time.

If you work with students, please take the time to talk about R U OK? Day and why it is important today and every day to check in with yourself and others.  Students can access support via our Health, Counselling and Disability service.
