Podcast examines rapid animal extinctions

Animal species have been going extinct since the dawn of time – which prompts the questions: why does it happen, and which are next?  Professor Corey Bradshaw, the Matthew Flinders Professor of Global Ecology at Flinders University, discusses these pressing questions on the latest Finding Genius podcast.

This prestigious international podcast presents world-leading medical and scientific researchers, innovators, and practitioners, and Professor Bradshaw was asked to convey his perspective as a global-change ecologist on the subject “Why are animal species rapidly going extinct?”

Through study how human endeavour and climate fluctuations have altered past, present, and future ecosystems, Professor Bradshaw uses methods such as species extinction modelling to uncover how much deforestation has occurred as a result of rapid urbanization and increasing agricultural intensification, contributing to the extinction of certain species.

The podcast also investigates which factors are greatly threatening animal populations, explains “co-extinction” and examines how climate change may be the dominant driver of this situation.

This episode is also available on Apple Podcast, and further details about Professor Bradshaw’s research is featured on his personal blog ConversationBytes.com
