Nominate scientists now for national prizes

If you know of an exceptional researcher or academic whose achievements are changing the world, then you need to nominate them now for the 2023 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science – because nominations are closing soon.

The prizes provide an annual opportunity to recognise and reward outstanding achievements in scientific research, research-based innovation and excellence in science teaching. Recipients receive national recognition from the Australian Government and provide a unique opportunity to showcase their work on the national stage.

A total of $750,000 in prize money is being offered for eligible Australian citizens and permanent residents across seven prize categories:

  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Science ($250,000)
  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation ($250,000)
  • Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year ($50,000)
  • Frank Fenner Prize for Life Scientist of the Year ($50,000)
  • Prize for New Innovators ($50,000)
  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Primary Schools ($50,000)
  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools ($50,000)

If you know someone you think deserves this honour, it’s up to you to nominate. Self-nominations are not an option for these prizes.

The nomination process is simple:

  1. Nominate: Submit your nomination via the website business.gov.au for the Science Prizes or the Science Teaching Prizes. You’ll need to provide a short summary of your nominee’s achievements (500 words or 750 words, depending on the Prize), contact details for two supporters and two independent referees, and supporting documentation.
  2. Shortlist: If your nominee is shortlisted, you’ll receive an email asking you to submit an online application form addressing the relevant assessment criteria.
  3. Verify: The independent selection committee will verify claims made in the nomination submission.
  4. Notify: Prize recipients and nominators will be notified of their award by phone and invited to attend the 2022 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science presentation event.

The Australian Government is committed to improving the diversity of nominees for the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, and particularly welcomes nominations of women, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, members of the LGBTIQA+ community, and people from regional and remote parts of Australia.

Nominations close at 5pm (AEDT) on Thursday 9 February 2023.
