Discussing the Voice to Parliament

An information session on political and legal aspects of the upcoming referendum on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, presented last week by the College of Business, Government and Law, attracted a strong audience of interested staff and students.

Rob Manwaring, Associate Professor of Politics and Policy, outlined what the Voice to Parliament is and how it would work, while Rowan Nicholson, Lecturer in Law, discussed the legal aspects of holding a referendum to change the constitution.

Dwayne Coulthard, a member of the Uluru Dialogue SA, explained the process of devising the Uluru Statement from the Heart and how it relates to the Voice to Parliament referendum, and session chair Jessica Genauer, Senior Lecturer in International Relations, outlined key debates about the Voice to Parliament referendum.

The panel presentations were followed by a lively and engaged discussion with online and in-person participants posing questions, issues and perspectives on the Voice to Parliament, which were elaborated with comments and explanations from the panel.

Stay tuned for further details about a University-wide session on the Voice to Parliament referendum that is being organised for August.
