New FUMA First Nations exhibit captivates

The remarkable contributions of First Nations artists to the Flinders University Museum of Art collection is showcased in a new FUMA exhibition launched last week.

New Acquisitons / New Perspectives was formally opened with a special event on Thursday 27 July, which featured speeches from Flinders University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling, Flinders University Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) Professor Simone Tur and Erin Thompson MP, who highlighted the significance of embracing diverse artistic perspectives.

The event began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country from Petiola Wilson, which set a meaningful tone for an evening filled with cultural appreciation.

Professor Tur delivered a moving address, emphasising the importance of recognising and celebrating First Nations artistic practice and storytelling.

FUMA would like to thank all those who supported and attended this important occasion, and acknowledges that the presence and commitment of those at the exhibition launch, and the wider University community, to promote diverse voices in the art community are truly valued.

Together, the Flinders University community continues to celebrate the power of art in fostering unity and understanding, while also honouring the rich heritage and creativity of First Nations artists.

The exhibition will remain open in the FUMA Gallery, Social Sciences North Building at Bedford Park until 15 September. Entry is free and opening times are from 10am-5pm, Monday to Friday; 10am-7pm, Thursdays; closed weekends and public holidays.
