Vale Gus Sinclair – economic historian

It is with great sadness that Flinders University acknowledges the recent passing of former Professor of Economic History Professor William (Gus) Sinclair.

Having arrived at Flinders University in 1973 from La Trobe University, Professor Sinclair was the second Professor of Economic History at Flinders, following in the footsteps of the inaugural Professor Seymour Broadbridge.

During his decade of service at Flinders, Professor Sinclair was appointed to the Australian Research Grants Committee, and published an influential book, The Process of Economic Development in Australia. Professor Sinclair was also Editor of the Australian Economic History Review, and elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.

Professor Sinclair left Flinders University in 1983, moving back to Melbourne where he took up the post of Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Politics at Monash University.

Our thoughts go out to Professor Sinclair’s family, friends and loved ones during this time. Professor Sinclair is survived by his beloved nieces and nephews.
