In touch with … Michelle Yeong

Having led a rejuvenation of Accounting studies at Flinders, Dr Michelle Yeong speaks about the importance of nurturing curiosity, and how resilience forms part of the formula for success in accounting.

What is your role and what does your work focus on?

I’m a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at the College of Business, Government and Law, leveraging more than 25 years of international experience in the financial services sector to enrich our students’ educational journey, and prepare them for a rewarding career in the dynamic world of accounting and finance.

Beyond my role in topic coordination, teaching, and curriculum development, I’ve taken a substantial role in co-leading the rejuvenation of the Flinders Accounting suite, introducing fresh, innovative approaches, and merging traditional accounting principles with contemporary topics that are pivotal in today’s financial landscape – such as financial technology (FinTech), sustainability and social impact, which are now integral parts of our syllabus.

With a focus on fostering critical thinking and encouraging a deep understanding of pressing issues including mental health, I contribute to the College by facilitating a learning environment that extends beyond just imparting knowledge aligned to industry’s evolving demands, and I ensure we are fostering resilience and relevance in our students’ future careers.

What do you love most about your role?

It’s the dynamism it offers and the opportunity to shape future financial professionals. Being at the juncture of academia and the real financial world allows me to leverage my deep-rooted interest in computer science and my expertise in financial technology to foster innovation and forward-thinking mindsets in our students.

Beyond the technical aspects, what genuinely excites me is the chance to ignite a spark in the students, nurturing their curiosity and guiding them to find inventive solutions to complex problems in the business environment. Seeing them evolve, leveraging technology to bring more efficient and effective solutions to business problems, gives me a sense of fulfilment and joy, knowing that I am contributing to nurturing individuals who will be the change-makers in the evolving landscape of business and finance.

How does your love for technology and coding relate to your current role?

My early foray into coding and computer programming laid a strong foundation for my interest in technology, a passion that very much remains alive. Initially drawn to computer science, I eventually chose a path in accounting and finance, seeking career stability during a time when the tech field was yet to promise secure job prospects. However, that early love for technology has merged seamlessly with my financial expertise, becoming a cornerstone in my research and teachings. I have always been intrigued by the potential of technology to revolutionise industries. The FinTech phenomenon, evolving business environments, and the constant push towards efficiency and innovation keep me excited and very much engaged in my role. It is this zest for technology and innovation that I aim to instil in my students, encouraging them to think beyond traditional realms and to be at the forefront of business model innovation, equipped with a rich blend of tech skills and financial acumen.

Can you share with us something that you are most proud of in your personal life?

I am most proud of is raising my son and daughter, nurturing them to become wonderful young adults. Losing my partner nearly 15 years ago indeed presented a tough path, yet it strengthened our family bond, knitting us closer in resilience and mutual support. Juggling professional commitments while being a single parent was not a simple feat, but looking at how they have blossomed into strong and resilient individuals fills my heart with immense pride and joy. Our family recently grew with the addition of a Cavoodle puppy, ushering in a fresh wave of happiness in our lives in Sydney. This journey, marked by resilience, love, and unity, is my greatest pride, a testimony to the unbreakable bonds we forged and the heights we attained through sheer determination and affection.

How do you usually spend your free time?

Free time is precious, and I love spending it immersing myself in activities that nurture both my spirit and mind. I have a keen interest in exploring different cultures, learning new languages, and understanding diverse perspectives, which often sees me traveling solo to different parts of the world. This passion for exploration and learning extends to my love for technology, where I enjoy staying updated with the latest tech trends and continuously enhancing my skills.

Nature plays a crucial role in my downtime, offering a space for rejuvenation and reflection. Balancing this love for technology and the serenity found in nature ensures a rich, fulfilling downtime that keeps me grounded and yet, always learning, always evolving.
