PhD candidate Isabella Reeves has become a favourite with readers of The Conversation. Her recent article, For generations, killer whales and First Nations hunted whales together. Now we suspect the orca group has gone extinct, was the most read article across The Conversation website during October. Co-authored by Traditional Knowledge holder , the article has so far been read 341,744 times.

Science journalist wins major US prize

Lauren Fuge

Flinders alumna Lauren Fuge (BCreatArts(CreatWriting) ’14) recently won an American Association for the Advancement of Science 2023 Kavli Science Journalism Award, an esteemed international science writing prize. Lauren, who now works as a deputy editor of quarterly science magazine Cosmos, was applauded for writing about her experiences climbing Tasmania’s giant Eucalyptus globulus, published in Cosmos’s March 2023 Issue 98. The story, Point of View, won the Gold Award in the magazine category of the awards program, which is endowed by the Kavli Foundation and open to journalists worldwide. This year, it attracted entries from a record 74 countries – and this was the first time a writer from an Australian magazine has received this accolade. Applause for our most innovative women

Flinders graduates Libby Trainor Parker (BEd(UP/LS) ’06) and Professor Michelle Tuckey PhD(Psyc)(Hons) ’04) were among 12 inspiring women recognised for their groundbreaking work at this year’s Women in Innovation Awards, which highlight and honour some of South Australia’s most remarkable and innovative women. Libby, a dynamic author, comedian, journalist, radio presenter, teacher and cabaret performer who was diagnosed with neurodivergence at 44, was awarded in the Arts category for her work to help empower people learn more about their bodies and brains, so they can take charge of their physical and mental health. Professor Tuckey was awarded in the Social Impact category for being the driving force behind groundbreaking innovations in workplace bullying prevention.
