Recognising staff excellence at annual awards

Remarkable contributions by Flinders University staff have been recognised in the 2023 Staff Awards – from furthering Flinders’ commitment to Reconciliation to innovative teaching practices that are improving outcomes for students across the University.

Held last week on the Bedford Park campus, the annual awards celebrate the individuals and teams across the University who are helping Flinders achieve its vision of changing lives and changing the world. Check out the awards ceremony here.

Staff Service Awards were presented by Vice-President Corporate Services Mark Gregory, who broke into an impromptu Elton John song as he reflected on the contributions of recipients who have been with Flinders for 25 years. The 2023 Staff Service Award recipients are:

Mr Gregory also presented the 2023 Professional Staff Awards, awarded to individuals and teams embodying Flinders University’s ethos and values. The Flinders Student-Centred Award was awarded to Jacob Blokland, the Flinders Innovation Award to Evelyn Bennett and the Flinders Integrity Award to Katherine Reaiche, while the Flinders Courage Award was awarded to Nalini Klopp, the Flinders Excellence Award to Chris Hince and the Flinders Wellbeing Award to Gareth Furber. The Biodiversity Facility Team from the College of Science and Engineering was awarded the Flinders Dream Team Award for 2023.

Professor Simone Tur, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) presented the Flinders Reconciliation Award on behalf of herself and RAP Oversight Committee Co-Chair Professor Jonathan Craig. The Flinders Reconciliation Individual Award was awarded to Dr Joanne Buckskin and Chris Hince. The Flinders Reconciliation Team Award was awarded to the Library RAP Working Group, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Advancement, Rural and Remote Health NT – eGFR3 Study Team, the Remote Health Practice Program – Indigenous Knowledges and Culture Lecture Team and the the First Nations Researchers Collective Leadership Team.

This 2023 Research Awards were presented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Robert Saint. The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Early Career Researchers was awarded to Dr Norma Bulamu, Dr Stacey Henderson, Dr Bastien Lechat, Dr Ben Lohmeyer and Molla Wassie. The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Mid-Career Researchers to Associate Professor Martin Breed, Dr Ashley Hopkins, Associate Professor Zhongfan Jia, Dr Emmanuelle Souzeau and Professor Melanie Takarangi.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Impact and Engagement went to Dr Brooke Spaeth (Early Career Researcher), Dr Eddie Banks (Mid-Career Researcher) and Professor Julie Ratcliffe’s team (Research Team).  The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Leadership was presented to Professor Corey Bradshaw, Professor Danny Eckert and Professor Tracey Wade. Dr Amy Matthews was the recipient of the 2023 Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Higher Degree Research Supervision Award.

Professor Michelle Picard, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching Innovation), presented the 2023 Vice-Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching to Dr Ali Enright, Dr Claire Henry and team, and Associate Professor Ingo Koeper and team, while Dr Gareth Butler and team won the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Innovation in Teaching. Dr Timna Garnet, Dr Elke Sokoya, Dr Jessica Genauer and Dr Luis da Vinha were all recognised with commendations.
