Future leaders on the Horizon

Diverse leadership was the theme of this year’s Horizon Award Leadership Summit, hosted recently by the Horizon Team at Flinders University. With guest speakers including industry experts and Horizon Award alumni who are now using the skills they developed as part of the program, it was a great day full of lessons and insights from a diverse group of leaders.

The Flinders Horizon Award program, which is open to all students, sits alongside a student’s academic studies. This innovative program provides further opportunities for students to develop professional skills and gain new experiences and insights that will benefit their future careers.

Guest speakers at the Summit included Jo Thomas, former CEO of The Australian Institute of Business, who is now starting her own new venture, edXpert. Jo provided a great quote: “It’s exhausting trying to be someone you’re not, so just be your authentic self.”

Megan Marotti, Fundraising and Partnerships Lead at Can:DO Group (Can:Do Hearing and Can:Do 4Kids) spoke about her inspirational leadership journey, which started with self-advocacy from the age of 5, mentoring at 16 and ongoing leadership success, despite the challenges she has faced.

Students put their leadership styles to the test

An alumni panel of previous Horizon students, including Alessandro Sereni, Merielle Intveld and Hui Yu, also shared their leadership pointers and tips on how to make your own mark. Students then put their learning about leadership styles into practice by doing some experiential learning using Lego.

Special thanks go to the Horizon team for making the day a huge success.
