Introducing a new regional medical program

Flinders has been awarded the largest national share – 25 per cent – of a new federal funding program to increase the number of medical students studying in regional Australia.

Thanks to $19.7 million in Commonwealth funding, we will be establishing a new four-year Doctor of Medicine degree that can be completed entirely in regional South Australia. Commencing in 2025, the program will offer 40 Commonwealth Supported Places.

As a proven leader in training rural doctors, Flinders is continuing to support communities through the Northern Territory and regional South Australia by ensuring our students are well-prepared for the challenges and rewards of regional practice. This new investment from the Commonwealth is a testament to our ongoing commitment, and demonstrates our role as a pioneer in medical education with a focus on exposure to rural health settings, practical skills and collaboration with other health professionals.

This funding will see the introduction of new teaching and learning facilities, student accommodation, and expert local academic and professional staff across Flinders’ SA regional footprint, including Barossa, Renmark, Berri, Murray Bridge, Victor Harbor, and Mount Gambier.
