Distinguished Emeritus Professor Marcello Costa has been awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Australasian Neuroscience Society (ANS) at its recent annual meeting, held in Brisbane. The ANS Distinguished Achievement award is an occasional award for an outstanding contribution by an individual to neuroscience in Australia or New Zealand, and to the ANS. It is the highest honour conferred by the Society.

Award for Pathology’s best

Associate Professor Sonja Klebe

Associate Professor Sonja Klebe, from the Department of Anatomical Pathology at Flinders Medical Centre ,was co-recipient of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Pathology Article of the Year Award 2023. The article – “Real-world prevalence of PD-L1 expression in non-small cell lung cancer: an Australia-wide multi-centre retrospective observational study”, by Prudence Russell, Alexandra Farrall, Sarita Prabhakaran, Khashayar Asadi, Wade Barrett, Caroline Cooper, Wendy Cooper, Samuel Cotton, Edwina Duhig, Matthew Egan, Stephen Fox, David Godbolt, Shilpa Gupta, Aniza Hassan, Connull Leslie, Trishe Leong, David Moffat, Min Ru Qiu, Vanathi Sivasubramaniam, Joanna Skerman, Cameron Snell, Michael Walsh, Karen Whale and Sonja Klebe – was published in the December 2023 edition of Pathology. To celebrate 50 years of publication of the RCPA journal Pathology in 2018, the RCPA established a Pathology Article of the Year Award, which is now presented annually – and Professor Klebe’s article was considered to be of outstanding scientific merit and the most significant manuscript published in Pathology in 2023. As this article has three equal first authors and a corresponding author, all four will be presented with their award at the RCPA Admission of New Fellows and Awards Ceremony, on Saturday 2 March 2024 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Adelaide. The ceremony is held during the RCPA’s annual scientific meeting, Pathology Update, from 1-3 March 2024 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Elsevier, publisher of the journal, will make the winning article freely available online for 12 months. Flinders PhD alumni Abdullah Hasan has been selected to join the Scientific Committee for the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress 2025 in Helsinki. Dr Hasan was recommended for the committee due to his expertise and dedication to nursing and healthcare. The primary goal of the Scientific Committee is to guide the ICN Congress towards
delivering a high-quality, innovative and globally relevant scientific program.

Applause for NT Clinical Educator

Congratulations to Flinders  CMPH Academic Status holder Dr Rael Codron, also Director of Medical Services at Tennant Creek Hospital, who has been named Northern Territory’s Clinical Educator of the Year for 2023 by the Northern Territory Prevocational Medical Assurance Services (PMAS). Dr Codron’s dedication to improving health outcomes in the Barkly Region, evident through the establishment of a local sustainable health service, earned him this prestigious award. The award judges noted that his diverse career background adds depth to his teaching abilities, making him a standout clinical educator.
