Facilitating multiple assignment attempts

A common concern among people moving from Moodle to Canvas is with changes in how assignments are resubmitted.

In Moodle, specific processes were required to revert an assignment to a draft, or to grant students a resubmission. This led to many people minimising the number of attempts a student could make, which was the recommended process at Flinders for many years.

In Canvas, both reversions and resubmissions are achieved by allowing multiple attempts in an assignment, in turn giving students greater autonomy and responsibility in the submission process.

Recommended number of attempts: Canvas permits teachers to allow either a set or unlimited number of attempts. Allowing unlimited attempts minimises student confusion from setting the number of attempts lower than was needed, and enables students to correct mistaken submissions without intervention from staff.

Preventing students from submitting throughout the semester: Set an until date in your assignment to prevent students from submitting after that date.

Late voluntary resubmissions: Students who choose to resubmit after their due are warned that their new submission will be overdue. They are then given a chance to cancel their resubmission.

Managing multiple versions: Markers will always see the most recent submission by default but can toggle between older versions if needed.

Opportunities for plagiarism: Any submission a student makes, regardless of the reason, is automatically submitted through Turnitin and matched against their database.
