New Support for Students Policy implemented

Flinders University’s Support for Students Policy is now available in the Policy Library. It is based on detailed requirements set out in the Higher Education Provider Support for Student Policy Guidelines released by the Department of Education.

The policy brings together Flinders University’s high-level support principles, student and staff responsibilities, and details how we provide support to assist students’ academic and personal success. It is complemented by Schedule 1 that outlines our student support framework against the detailed requirements.

In 2023, the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA) was amended to require all Higher Education providers to have a ‘Support for Students Policy’. The new requirement was an early outcome of the Australian Universities Accord process to ensure providers have appropriate student supports available, that students are aware of them, and that the supports are fit for purpose in ensuring students are given the best opportunity to succeed.

Flinders’ policy was implemented on Monday 1 April, and was a milestone in Flinders’ effort to meet the new HESA obligation, although it is only the start of a journey where we have the opportunity to look at further improving how we support our students.

The Working Group established to lead this work under the sponsorship of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students) will continue to coordinate activities during 2024 to ensure that our student support framework is equitable and fit for purpose. Key activities over the coming months will be a formal review of the Student Progress Policy and Procedures, the establishment of quality assurance and monitoring mechanisms ahead of 2025 reporting obligations, and working with our students to create a student-friendly and accessible version of our new policy.

Achieving a successful outcome and a positive impact on the student experience will require a whole-of-University approach, with collaboration and input from all staff. Both academic and professional staff play an essential role in supporting student success, and everyone’s contribution will be important.

There will be many opportunities to contribute over coming months and if you are keen to be involved, register your interest with Annika Danielsson, Senior Director Student Experience & Management, via dvcsoperations@flinders.edu.au.
