Extensive building refurbishment continues

Improvements to CSE buildings and carpark 7 continue

Works are progressing on the Undergraduate Science Lab ground floor, and the Roof Renewal stormwater upgrade in and around Physical Sciences and car park 7. If you work in CSE buildings, check out updates on the CSE Central SharePoint page. Visitors to the area should note that the compound and barriers will be changing during this week, so please take note of signage and marked pathways.

Registry building refurbishments

The Professional Services and Registry Buildings’ Staff Workspaces Project begins this week with refurbishment of room 117 on level 1 of the Registry building (former Central Archives room). Parts of the building will be closed on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April between 7am and 5pm, including the western entrance and lift and stairs (near Flinders gym/Student Services building). Room 117 will be unavailable from 7am on Friday 19 April. Where possible, please do not enter the building this weekend. If you must access it, please use the eastern entrance and stairs (from Registry Road). Disability access will be available to Level 1 only, via the Professional Services building through the Tea Room.

Car park 14 telco works

From Wednesday 17 to Friday 26 April, a telecommunications contractor will be in car park 14 to upgrade equipment, but there will be no impact to university connectivity. Approximately 12 parking bays will be blocked off and traffic management will be in place to maintain vehicle flow. Please follow redirections and adhere to speed restrictions.

HMRB update

Landscaping works are taking place around the perimeter of the Health and Medical Research Building, including planting of the traditional Indigenous medicine garden on the building’s northern side, with species including the medicinal Native hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa), Gold Dust Wattle (Acacia acinacea) and Black Anther Flax Lily (Dianella brevicaulis). There are also 16 varieties of eucalyptus, banksia and angophora trees and 40 varieties of shrubs and ground covers that will frame the central fire pit and rustic seating area. Once established, the HMRB northern courtyard will provide a lush connection between Station Plaza and University Drive.

Where are the yellow recycling bins?

Wondering what happened to yellow co-mingled recycling bins at Flinders? In South Australia, recycling via yellow bins is currently only available to residential properties, not commercial properties. As Flinders University is classified as commercial, we have transitioned to the 10c deposit recycling system to ensure as many recyclable items generated on campus are recovered and recycled properly.  To make things clear for staff and students, bin signage across our four waste streams has been updated. At a glance you can work out which bin is correct for your waste: Red (general), White (10c recycling), Green (organics) or Teal (paper and cardboard). Learn more on the resource recovery webpage.

Electrical Maintenance Program

To meet mandatory compliance obligations and keep everyone safe, the essential electrical safety maintenance team will be on North Ridge during April in the following buildings:

  • Yungkurrinthi Student Engagement Centre
  • Health Counselling & Disability
  • Sports Centre
  • Health Sciences, and
  • Health Sciences Lecture Theatre Complex.

What does it involve?

RCD (Safety Switch) Testing will be conducted between midnight and 8am, involving a short power outage. Test & Tag of electrical appliances will be conducted both after hours and during business hours. It requires your appliances to be available and powered down for a few minutes.

What do you need to do?

  • Save your work before you leave each day.
  • If you keep appliances in secure cupboards/rooms, please contact Luke Lilburn to arrange a time to have them tested.
  • If you manage power sensitive or critical equipment and require specific timing arrangements to minimise impact, please contact Luke Lilburn.
