Library’s free textbook publishing initiative

Flinders University library is supporting the creation and publication of freely available textbooks, in addition to assisting academics in selecting existing high quality open textbooks to assign to their topics.

Associate Professor Michelle Gander (Dean, People & Resources in College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) has written the first open access textbook published by Flinders University through the library’s open book publishing program, which was celebrated in a launch event last week.

The book, Building Your Career: A Guide for Students, is now available at zero cost by downloading it here – and it can be incorporated into a variety of topics, both at Flinders and institutions around the world.

This initiative is part of a global movement the library is supporting to lessen the financial textbook burden for students and joins a national network of university libraries building a collection of freely available university-authored Australian content.

For help to source a freely available textbook, submit an ‘Online Content for topics request’ in Service One. Academics who are interested in potentially authoring a book can contact LibraryEducation.Enagement@flinders.edu.au
