The Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement has grown by two, with the commencement of Nstarzia and Cooper in the newly created roles of Outreach & Pathway Officers. The roles will support commencing students during the transition to university, alongside outreach activities to promote the services and pathways on offer at Flinders.
When Nstarzia first started her Bachelor of Law and Society at Flinders University, little did she know that she would one day help to strengthen Flinders’ commitment to inclusive education and expanding pathways for Indigenous students. A participant of the Indigenous Employment Scheme, she’s looking forward to making a difference in the lives of commencing students – and having the autonomy to do it her way.
“I’m excited by the chance to collaborate with like-minded colleagues and be part of initiatives that are both progressive and student focused. Flinders University’s strong connection to the community and its dedication to diversity and inclusion align perfectly with my personal values, and I can’t wait to help bring those goals to life through meaningful outreach and engagement,” says Nstarzia.
With a dream of inspiring others, Cooper comes with extensive experience in First Nations support and workspaces. As each day brings something different for the team, he’s looking forward to making the position his own, providing the opportunity for wraparound support for students from the get-go.
“I’m really looking forward to getting out and about and discussing all things university with First Nations mob! We’re fortunate to be able to travel regionally and interstate to better inform and support those who may not have direct access to us here on Kaurna Yerta.”
“I thrive when providing support to those who may not know of the opportunities that are available to them and guiding these people to the place that best suits them,” says Cooper.
Inspired by the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities and their extended families, both Nstarzia and Cooper are looking forward to playing a part in supporting young students as they strive to break new ground for themselves and for future generations – and they’ll be doing it with the kindness, grace and courteousness shown to them by their own mentors.
“Growing up, I didn’t always see paths that felt like they were ‘meant for me’, so creating my own path has been a huge source of pride for me. But that isn’t to say there wasn’t challenges and moments of doubt – but I got through it thanks to some resilience, self-belief and the power of community. And now I’m really looking forward to sharing that with others,” says Nstarzia.
“I am continuously reminded by this very fact that I, in turn, can provide people with the same courteousness and will continue to strive to do so in my new role,” says Cooper.
