Four Flinders University engineering graduates will step into employment in local government in 2025 under the new City of Mitcham and City of Marion Joint Engineering Graduate Program.
“We’re excited to announce this innovative program, developed in collaboration with Flinders University and our neighbouring council, the City of Mitcham, to nurture the next generation of local government leaders. By providing hands-on experience and fostering meaningful projects, we’re not just addressing workforce challenges but building a stronger, more resilient workforce for the future of our community,” said Ben Keen, General Manager City Development, City of Marion.
Two graduates will be allocated to each council and rotate between councils throughout the two-year graduate program to gain a broad perspective and deepen their knowledge.
“This collaboration is underpinned by a genuine approach to developing and engaging with Flinders University students and providing equal opportunity to any students interested in a career in local government,” said Professor Giselle Rampersad.
“Our students greatly value opportunities in local government which includes a focus on sustainability projects such as managing waste, renewable energy, and infrastructure. These councils have long employed our students from Environmental Health and Environmental Science and we look forward to continuing to deepen our relationship into the future.”
Flinders University has a long-standing and positive relationship with both local councils as they surround Bedford Park and Tonsley Campuses, which has led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understating (MoU) this month.
“Our Memorandum of Understanding with Flinders University formalises a long-standing partnership and paves the way for exciting opportunities in graduate development, curriculum co-creation, and research. Together, we’re shaping the future of local government,” said Dan Baker, General Manager, Engineering and Horticulture.
Marion and Mitcham councils already support short-term student placements which will act as a pipeline into the Joint Graduate Program. The two students pictured below are undertaking 100-day/20-week placement and are studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) degree, with a further four Master of Engineering, Civil students who have recently started their 12-week placements.
Applications to enrol for 2025 have closed, however students can express their interest in future programs here. This program is open to current Flinders University Students or recent graduates and the application form can be accessed through CareerHub via Flinders OKTA. Click here for more information.
