Sovereign Acts | Love Praxis

A Flinders University Museum of Art exhibition in partnership with Unbound Collective — Ali Gumillya Baker (Mirning), Faye Rosas Blanch (Mbararam, Yidinyji), Natalie Harkin (Narungga), and Simone Ulalka Tur (Yankunytjatjara). This landmark exhibition celebrates 10 years of critical and creative work by the nationally acclaimed Unbound Collective, a group of First Nations women based on Kaurna Yarta whose shared praxis represents a rupturing and reimagining of colonial institutions, and radical endeavour to shape the world anew.

An Incomplete Encyclopedia of Hugs

Senior Lecturer in Drama Dr Sarah Peters is remounting her popular An Incomplete Encyclopedia of Hugs for a short second season.

Directed by alumni Eliza Lovell (BA (Drama) (Hons) ’94), Encyclopedia of Hugs blends spoken word poetry with round-the-kitchen-table style storytelling, Juno journeys through her personal hug repertoire, weaving tales of loss and love as she figures out what to do with this one glorious life. One hug at a time.

Adult Bubble Show

Grad Kurt Murray is back with a more adult show in Adult Bubble Show, where High Level Bubble Artistry meets comedy Performance Art. Shredded physiques and the most extraordinary bubbles you have ever seen. See bubble cubes, spinning carousels, giant tubes, filled with gas and set on fire on bodies, shadow bubble erotica, foam falling like snow, bubbles executed with only legs, bubbles that dance on hands and a million bubble finale cascading onto the audience. A fringe cult hit since 2017 selling out shows across the globe from Australia to Ireland.

In Motion

Flinders graduate Jasmine Warland (BCreatArts(Drama) ’21, BCreatArts(Hons) ’22) is co-producing In Motion, which blurs the lines of circus, dance and theatre. Follow a story of grief and self-discovery to explore the ups, downs and at times absurdity of rebuilding ourselves after loss. In an exploration of the unpredictability of feelings and our expectations of them, Virago Circus’ new work pushes the boundaries of circus and physical theatre, presenting the complicated process of grieving embodied through a series of movement acts in a show where live art meets life.

Extra Curricular: mark 2

Controlled Environment Biorepository Coordinator Dylan McCullough will play bass in Extra Curricular: Mark 2, a sequel to the sold out, smash hit Extra Curricular. With in jokes for anyone who has worked in the education sector, Mark has checked the front office suggestion box and created the course content you want covered.

Here We Are

Stories from strangers, the estranged, strange happenings, home truths. Every night, Emma Beech (BA(Hons) ’01) will be making the show with you – the stories she tells, how she tells them, in what order and what way. Expect humour and pathos. Lights Out

Alumni Danilo Laganin (BCreatArts(Drama) ’19) stars in Lights Out, an adventure into a world of imagination, game, and song – because the fun begins when the lights go out … just don’t tell mum and dad!

Kidstock: an interactive mini-music festival for families

Dylan McCullough is back on bass in Kidstock, a pint-sized music-fest that’ll entertain kids and their families with original songs, cheeky covers, physical comedy and relatable stories. From pub classics to club bangers, Kidstock is a fun and accessible, live music show.

Role to Cast LIVE

Join Chris Bond (BA ’13, BCreatArts(Hons) ’16) and a cast of professional Aussie performers for four incredible nights of tabletop roleplaying at The Lost Dice, Adelaide’s beloved board game cafe. Role to Cast LIVE brings the Ennie award-winning tabletop roleplaying podcast to the stage with each member of the cast taking the storyteller’s seat for one night to weave an original story set in a world of their choosing and where the roll of the dice decides between triumph and disaster. The crew’s unrivalled storytelling will be enhanced by professional lighting, sound and production for a fully immersive experience that is utterly unique.

Improvised Movie Mash-Up

From the madcap creators of Oscar-Winning Improv and Letters to the Editor comes a BRAND-NEW, completely improvised cinematic spectacle!

These masters of improv, including Eden Trebilco (BCreatArts ’08, MTeach(Sec) ’11) having dazzled audiences at Edinburgh Fringe, Perth FringeWorld, and Melbourne International Comedy Festival, will mash up two of YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIES in a night of wild, unpredictable fun!

Bubble Show in Space (kids show)

Have you ever been in a room with a Million Bubbles?

Join Drama graduate Kurt Murray (BCreatArts ’07) and embark on a soap-tastic adventure to the intergalactic wonder that is bubbles in space! See a bubble like a rocket that launches 10 metres into the air, clear bubbles filled with smoke, bubbles that join into each other and separate, shadow bubble puppetry, fire bubbles, a bubble fire tornado, Aliens that could inside bubbles(children from the audience), bubbles that spin like a carousel, giant bubble tubes that arch through the sky and bubbles so big that several people could fit inside! The show finishes in a million bubble party that fills the room in a celebration of bubbles.

Future Science Talks: Comedy Edition

Research Fellow Dr Jack Manners stars in Australia’s favourite science comedy show, where a new group of local scientists have partnered with comedians to infuse humour into their scientific talks.

At each show, you’ll be hearing a series of short talks from Adelaide’s best, brightest and and emerging science professionals.

Dance Nation

Bachelor of Performance Honours directing student Hannah Smith is back in the directing chair for Dance Nation, a chaotic and transformative dive into the experience of adolescence.

Written by Clare Barron, and performed by third year Bachelor of Performance Acting students, Dance Nation follows a group of middle schoolers on a competitive dance team striving for national glory. Beneath the surface of sequins and routines lies a raw, visceral exploration of identity, ambition, and the messy reality of growing up.

A Choral Kaleidoscope – Music from Around the World

Executive Officer Melinda Pike and academic Associate Professor Kenneth Pope will perform with Lumina Vocal Ensemble in a A Choral Kaleidoscope – Music from Around the World.

From the shimmering gold of the African plains to the icy blue of Scandinavia’s hinterland, and the vibrant vocal colours of Bulgaria and Latin America, to the profound red of the Australian outback. Let Lumina take you on a journey through time and place to hear some of the world’s most fascinating choral music.

Peforming at the Institute Hall at Gawler Civic Centre on Saturday 1 March and at St John’s Anglican Church on Sunday 2 March and Wednesday 5 March, you can grab your tickets here.

Gull – or – The Most Lamentable Comedy Called Love

Directed by Drama Centre Manager and Lecturer, Dr Christopher Hurrell, featuring the first Honours students in the new Bachelor of Performance, the play by Australia’s pre-eminent multi-award-winning “trans-queen” playwright & personality, Glace Chase, is “a tongue-in-cheek Restoration Romp of bastardized history”. An updated version of Shakespeare’s cross-gendered comedies, Gull features a provocative twist for today’s feminist and queer sensibilities.

Full Time Ex-Lover

Honours Dance graduate Kate Burgess (BCreatArts(Dance) ’22, BCreatArts(Hons) ’23) is returning to the Fringe after winning Best Emerging Artist of 2024. Her new solo comedic, solo dance theatre show, Full Time Ex-Lover, follows Kate on a Kate on a rollercoaster journey through a series of unfortunate events after she uncovers evidence she isn’t the only woman in her partner’s life. This story unfolds through contemporary dance and a touch of burlesque, as she navigates the highs and lows of love, betrayal, and the complexities of modern dating.

First Love is the Revolution

Written by Rita Kalnejais, directed by our first Bachelor of Performance Honours directing student, Hannah Smith, and featuring Honours Acting students, First Love is a darkly comic retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

In this play the star-crossed lovers don’t come from different houses, but different species. This daring, unconventional love story explores identity, desire, and the raw thrill of youth, inviting audiences to experience love’s wild, unsettling edge.

The Good Decisions Project

From alumni Danielle Lim (BCreatArts(Drama) ’21, BCreatArts(Hons) ‘22) comes The Good Decisions Project, a new multi-disciplinary theatre project exploring the varying states of our mental health, the intricacies of our thought processes in decision-making, and what defines a ‘good decision’. Through three interconnecting storylines, this experimental play offers a fresh perspective of how our daily choices, no matter how big or small, can shape the trajectory of our lives. There is significance in celebrating our mundane achievements, as perhaps they are the ones that ground us the most when we need.

Interweaving live performance, film and visual art, we reflect and ponder: What do we choose to remember? How do we choose to move forward? In our rapid-paced and ever-changing world, there is never a shortage of decisions.

Glace’s Big Things

Multi-disciplinary trans queen Glace Chase, Flinders Drama Centre playwright-in-residence, performs this one night only staged reading of her newest play, Glace’s Big Things. Join Glace on this solo trans traveller’s alarming outback road trip as she takes on Covid lockdowns in search of the Big Croc and the Big Meat Ant, by way of the (many) Big Tradies in High-Vis. This is an unhinged storytelling standup of a nightlife glamazon battling the Aussie outback and its inhabitants, from the writer of the award-winning Triple X.

Rip, Drag & Ruminate

Be moved by Adelaide’s newest dance creators and performers in Rip, Drag & Ruminate, an ensemble of work by students from Flinders’ Bachelor in Creative Arts (DANCE).

Witness short, fresh pieces by artists with innovative styles and original stories to tell. Featuring an exceptional line-up of talent by final-year dance students, both choreographing and performing in each other’s works.

Press Play: interactive concert for kids

Staff members Alice Orchard and Amy Wyatt present Press Play, an accessible and sensory-friendly interactive live music concert for kids aged 0-7, with music performed live on stage by Alice and friends. Join in with singing, dancing, movement and fun!

The Backyarders’ 5th Birthday Extravaganza with The Red Earth Blues Band

Dylan McCullough’s folk/punk band is celebrating it’s 5th Birthday in style, with a one-off show supported by The Red Earth Blues Band. The musical equivalent of a sausage on bread at your local hardware store, The Backyarders’ high-energy folk/punk meets Fallen Sunrise’s laid back groove to produce one very special party as Aussie as Vegemite!

Margret, You’re A Virgin!

BA (Women’s and Gender Studies/Drama) student Mackenzie Richardson is the stage writer for Margret. Nearly-graduated high-school student Margret is met with a life-changing discovery; despite never having had heterosexual sex, she finds herself pregnant. This mystery and miracle trials her bonds with family and friends, puts her faith to the test, and forces her onto a profound journey of self-discovery while on the cusp of her adolescence. ‘Margret, You’re A Virgin!’ weaves a tale of bewildering surprises and deep introspection, exploring the sacred and the secular, the seen and unseen, and begs the question: What do you believe?

From Flinders alumni Teresa de Gennaro (BA (Drama) ’00, BA(Hons) ’01) comes House Club Classics, a dynamic, live music and multimedia celebration of house music’s journey from Chicago, to the world during the late 80’s, and 90’s. Blending storytelling, immersive visuals, and authentic beats, we create an atmosphere where the audience isn’t just watching, but feeling the music. With live drums, vocals, bass, synths, and samples, we bring classic house and dance anthems to life in a way that’s fresh and unpredictable.
