Leadership legacy: Simon Brennan announces his retirement and takes home national honour

From a Flinders University student to a leader in his field – Simon Brennan announces his retirement as Chief Research Development Officer and takes home a prestigious, national award for his lasting impact.

After a remarkable 42-year career in the research management sector, Simon Brennan, the Chief Research Development Officer at Flinders University, is stepping down from his role to enjoy retirement.

And Mr Brennan will be taking home with him the award of Fellow of ARMS from the Australian Research Management Society (ARMS), which recognises individuals who have made an enduring and substantial contribution to research management as a practitioner, mentor, trainer or advocate in the profession.

It was 1985 when Mr Brennan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Flinders University, returning to complete a Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management in 1998. In 2021 he found his way back to Flinders, this time as a leader of the Research Development and Support team and a valued member of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research team.

Throughout his expansive career of over 40 years, he has worked in both the State Government and Higher Education research management space. He has been a driving force in professionalising this field – leading reforms, mentoring future leaders, and shaping national conversations.

His work has influenced best practice in research management including, research development, ethics, compliance & integrity support, ERA and Engagement & Impact submissions, research contracts and strategic support to the DVCR and research leaders.

In 2001, Mr Brennan established and ran the University of Adelaide’s first faculty-based research support unit in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Raymond Chan, says Simon has mentored and inspired generations of research managers throughout his career.

“His inclusive and insightful style has empowered others to think strategically and lead confidently,” Professor Chan says.

“Simon is a trusted advisor and a generous mentor.

“His legacy is one of excellence, generosity, and vision.”
