Introducing BCLS and HSC

Following last year’s change proposals, disciplines within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have been integrated into the former College of Business Government and Law, and College of Education, Psychology and Social Work.

The result is two new colleges:

  • College of Business, Creative arts, Law and Social sciences (BCLS)
  • College of Human Sciences and Culture (HSC).

Naming things is not easy, and both colleges have been through an extensive process, involving college academic and professional staff, to arrive at their new names.

For BCLS, it became clear for many reasons that the visibility of discipline clusters was important and would make it easier for students and prospective students to identify their college. It would also make it simpler for staff, alumni and the external community.

“Figuring out the new name has been an important vehicle for our staff with different areas of expertise to come together, get to know each other, and work together in identifying synergies and opportunities in the new constellation of disciplines,” says Professor Michael Gilding, Vice President and Executive Dean, College of Business, Creative Arts, Law and Social sciences.

For HSC, the list of disciplines was simply too long, and the challenge became deciding on a shorter encompassing name that was still inclusive of the diversity of the college.

The College of Human Sciences and Culture also did considerable work on their teaching programs which will now be:

  • Education, Sport and TESOL
  • Psychology
  • Applied Social Work
  • Humanities and Social Inquiry.

“The work we have undertaken to decide our name and teaching programs has also set the foundation for and begun the process of exploring and leveraging the wonderful opportunities our new college can realise,” says Professor Deborah West, Vice President and Executive Dean, College of Human Sciences and Culture.

As we look positively to the future, there is an extensive body of work that now needs to occur at a university-wide level, from governance structures through to communications assets.

We recognise that there is some work to do on updating our website, email signatures, course loop, signage, marketing, data collection and communications. We’ll be working collaboratively to ensure these changes are made in a timely way. We appreciate the support of staff through this process.
