What actually gets students to do SETs?

Hint: it’s not reminders.

Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) surveys open 1 June giving students and staff the chance to win.

  • Students: chance to win one of ten $50 gift cards
  • Staff: all topics that achieve a 75%+ response rate will go in the draw for not one, but two $50 gift cards this semester.

Last semester, HLTH1006 – Therapeutic Communication in Allied Health (Topic Coordinator: Louisa Matwiejczyk) won the SET prize with an incredible 93% response rate in a delivery across Greater Green Triangle, Port Pirie and Riverland.

A fantastic result for Louisa and the teaching team.

So we asked Louisa … what worked?

“If there was one tip, it would be… encouraging student agency and active participation in their own learning. What this looks like is encouraging students to take ownership of their learning by involving them in shaping the topic experience.”

“This includes inviting feedback on content delivery, offering choices in assessments, and creating space for students to contribute examples, experiences and perspectives from their own contexts.”

“Students feel more invested, and the learning environment becomes more collaborative and responsive to their needs.”

We also asked the HLTH1006 tutors for their thoughts.

“Listening to the students give feedback (good and bad!). Validate what they have said.”

“Gently push back by asking students to take some responsibility… by completing the SETs.”

“Let the students know that their feedback is highly valued… and that it can lead to real improvements.”

“Students have the power to influence their learning experience. SETs are one important way to do that.”

Now’s the time to start the conversation and remind students they could win a $50 voucher too.
