Update to Honorary Awards Policy

A review of the Honorary Awards Policy has recently been completed as part of the University’s regular policy review cycle. The policy sets out how Flinders recognises outstanding contributions through honorary awards, including honorary degrees and the Companion of the University.

As a result of the review, the policy has been updated to improve clarity, streamline processes, and strengthen governance. Key updates include:

  • Clearer nominations: the Chief of Staff will call for nominations from Council and the Senior Executive Team. Staff who wish to recommend a nomination may do so to a member of the SET.
  • Better timing: an annual June meeting of the Honorary Awards Committee will support timely decisions ahead of April and December graduation ceremonies.
  • Improved nominee management: introduction of annual review and clearer timeframes for progressing approved nominees.
  • Simplified approvals: final approval now rests with the Vice-Chancellor, with Council continuing to be advised of outcomes.

These changes support a more consistent, transparent, and efficient approach to recognising excellence across the University community.
