What is your role here at Flinders?
I am a Network Services Specialist, part of the Network Services team in the Information and Digital Services (IDS) division.
What initially drew you to working in the Information and Digital Services team?
I have always had an interest in IT. The role IDS plays has a direct impact on learning outcomes. The job goes beyond basic uptime — it actively creates the environment where students and faculty can thrive. It has unique challenges, from managing high-density wireless environments to connecting student and IoT devices. So the opportunity to be a part of that was enticing.
Tell us a bit about how your work on IT infrastructure and network services keeps Flinders’ core services functioning smoothly?
The continuous modernisation of our academic and operational environments means that nearly every university function now relies on integrated IT and network infrastructure. This critical technology supports everything from cutting-edge research, laboratory equipment and digital library archives to automated campus climate control systems.
Consequently, our team’s work directly enhances the daily experiences of students, staff, academics, and university guests alike.
What has been your career highlight to date?
There have been several highlights such as being involved in the delivery of the new facilities at the City, Tonsley and Bedford Park campuses, upgrading network capabilities and reliability of Flinders sites from Victor Harbor to Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory, and everything in between.
What do you enjoy about working at Flinders?
The people! I have made some great friends working at Flinders. Tie that in with the ability to get out and walk around the green and leafy Bedford Park campus and enjoy its sea views (yes, you do get used to the hills and stairs), along with the rare opportunity to work on a vast variety of technology as part of my role. All of this combined make the days enjoyable.
Tell us about your ideal weekend.
An ideal weekend would balance outdoor adventure with calm relaxation. Beginning by being court, field or track side to watch my kids compete in their local sports, followed by an energetic family hike along spectacular coastal trails of the Fleurieu, discovering hidden beaches and native wildlife.
After a day of exploration, the focus would then shift to indulging in the region’s fine foods, sampling local produce and great coffee. Then heading off to explore art galleries and attending live music events. The evening concludes quietly, gathered around a crackling open fire with a glass of wine in hand.
