Tell us about your role as a Senior Policy and Projects Officer at Flinders and what that involves.

I’m part of the Governance, Legal and Risk team, with a particular focus on governance. My role is mainly about helping to develop, maintain and improve the University’s policy and delegations frameworks. There are around 240 policy documents in the Flinders Policy Library, so I work with policy owners and colleagues from across the University to help keep those documents up to date, compliant and useful.

I also provide advice on how policies, procedures and delegations should be interpreted and developed, and I manage a range of policy and delegations projects and initiatives. It’s varied work, and I’m lucky to work with people across so many different areas of the University.

Outside of work I…

Enjoy spending time with my family. I have two school-aged boys who are involved in a range of extra-curricular activities, so there is usually something on during weeknights and on the weekend.

I’m also a passionate Port Adelaide supporter and go to every home game at Adelaide Oval with my mum, aunty and sons. In summer, my favourite thing to do is swim, either at the beach or the local pool. I also enjoy reading and often spend time catching up with my extended family.

What do you enjoy about working at Flinders?

There are a few things I really enjoy about working at Flinders: the variety of the work, the people and the location.

Because policy touches so many parts of the University – from academic and student matters to facilities, information management, governance, risk, people and culture, and research – the work is always varied. I’m constantly learning something new about the University and how it operates.

I also get to work with people across Flinders who are very capable and generous with their knowledge. I learn a lot from their expertise and experience.

And we are pretty spoilt with the Bedford Park campus. It’s lovely to hear kookaburras as you walk across campus, or to catch a winter sunset over the ocean on the way to the car park at the end of the day.

My first ever job was…

My first job was working as a swimming instructor during high school and university. Swimming is such an important life and social skill in Australia, and I really enjoyed helping people learn to swim and be safe in the water. I taught everyone from young children to adults, including people with disability.

Tell us about your favourite holiday.

Last year, we took our first overseas family holiday to Japan. It was really special because I studied Japanese as part of my Bachelor of International Studies here at Flinders, and I also lived in Japan for a year when I was younger.

It was wonderful to take my family there, revisit some familiar places and try to use my very rusty Japanese again. It felt like a lovely mix of new family memories and a bit of a trip down memory lane.
