Creatively connecting the young and old

A determination to bring the young and the elderly together for mutual benefit has helped to earn Flinders University social work student Jasmine Daws the Most Outstanding Student Award at community organisation ACH Group’s annual awards.

Ms Daws planned and created a school holiday program, called Connexon, to encourage intergenerational learning, share skills and promote wellbeing for older people while ensuring children had fun through engaging activities.

A successful pilot in the July 2017 school holidays saw Port Noarlunga Primary school students visit Perry Park Residential Living in Adelaide’s south and engage with residents while having a wonderful time learning skills such as gardening, cooking, craft and bowling – and battling it out with residents on the Wii ten pin bowling.

The pilot was enjoyed by all and implemented in subsequent school holidays.

The ACH Group recognises people who are making an impact to the organisation and its communities through annual awards each year. The 2018 awards event was held on 17 August 2018.
