Laying waste to pollution

Devastation from oil spills like the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster could be dramatically reduced thanks to an invention by Dr Justin Chalker, who will talk about his ground-breaking research (including new, unpublished work) at the next BRAVE lecture.

The tragic sight of birds, mammals and sea turtles covered in oil could be a thing of the past with Dr Chalker’s pioneering technology, which uses petroleum waste to produce a sponge-like substance capable of soaking up crude oil from water in an environmental win-win. This new development can also capture the largest source of mercury emissions produced here in Australia, and across the globe.

Dr Chalker will discuss his passion for taking waste and transforming it into new and useful polymers, and present on three applications of the substance for the benefit of both people and the environment.
