Updates from the Flinders Medical Students’ Society (FMSS)

FMSS would like to acknowledge the Kaurna people, the original custodians of this land, and recognise the relationship between Indigenous people and the lands and waters of the Adelaide Plains, on which we learn and grow every day.

The FMSS committee is truly finishing the year in style, hosting some of our biggest events in October. We started the month with our much awaited Enchanted Forest Wright Evan’s Med Ball. This event proved that Flinders’ medical students scrub up well! It was also our first medical ball since 2019 free of COVID restrictions – and what fun we all had on the dance floor. We were treated to a delicious three course meal and a live band. This night was the perfect opportunity to let our hair down, and celebrate the year that has been. It was a seamlessly organised evening, for which I would like to thank our Social Convenors, Maddi Veitch, Chelsea Boylan and Anna Sandhu.  Thank you also to Professor Jonathan Craig and Dr. Michal Wozniak for joining our celebrations.

Med Ball was closely followed by FMSS’ annual Med Revue performance, led by our creative and multi-talented Med Revue Convenor, Mikayla Hussey. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew who put together a show from scratch – writing the script, composing the music, putting together skits, costumes and props, rehearsing tirelessly, performing with a live band, singing and dancing. Later in October, we also released the 2022 edition of the FMSS magazine, ‘Placebo’, led by our Publications Director, Svetlana Astashova. This year, the magazine’s theme was ‘Medicine and Society’, providing readers with thought-provoking and engaging articles on a collection of interesting topics, including the dilemma of ‘truth telling’ in medicine, a medical perspective on effective altruism, peer work, mental health, and much more. The Placebo magazine can be accessed via our website.

Finally, I am so excited to announce that at our Annual General Meeting, we elected the incoming 2023 FMSS executive and senior committees, who will be commencing term in December. Our executive committee next year consists of Christine Masoulf (President), Jordyn Tomba (Senior Vice President), Declan Fitch-Woolford (Vice President Internal), Angelina Arora (Vice President External), Benita Rajvi (Secretary), Chiara Gorlach (Treasurer), Kevin Huang (Sponsorship Director), and Tom Cliffe (AMSA Representative). We are so excited to be handing over the reins to such a dedicated, creative, talented and diligent group of leaders, and we truly cannot wait to see what they achieve!
