On 15 February, Flinders University hosted a multiple choice question (MCQ) writing workshop, facilitated by Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ) and the Australian Medical Council (AMC). Flinders participants joined with almost 400 colleagues from 15 medical schools across Australia and New Zealand, to:
- Build our skills in item / MCQ writing
- Develop item / MCQ banks for robust assessment of Flinders medical students
- Network with academic and clinical colleagues
Dr Peter Harris (Chair of AMC MCQ Assessment Panel) introduced the AMC approach to developing MCQs. To request a copy of his presentation, please email clinicians@flinders.edu.au
We thank Prof Lambert Schuwirth, Prof Michael Shanahan, Dr Kishan Pandithage, A/Prof Zoe Adey-Wakeling and Dr Peter Michelmore for guiding participants in Adelaide, Darwin and regional SA through the writing and review process. Thanks also to special guests Emeritus Professor David Prideaux and A/Prof Professor Peter Devitt for joining us and sharing their expertise. All of the MCQs developed during the workshop are now available for Flinders to review, adapt and use for future MD assessments.
Participants were provided a certificate of participation that may be presented to medical colleges as evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
Our next professional development workshop will be held on Monday 15 May 2023, with a focus on the MD Year 3 Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – including case writing and examination. Registration details will be posted shortly.
