On 11 May 2026, Flinders was awarded five prestigious higher degree by research (HDR) top-up scholarships from the Kathleen Lumley Foundation, each valued at $63,000. These top-up scholarships were offered for the first time in 2026, with PhD students eligible to apply from both South Australian universities.
All five scholarships were awarded to Flinders HDR students, including four from the College of Science and Engineering and one from the College of Medicine and Public Health. Further information on the recipients and their research is available here.

The scholarships were formally presented by the Governor of South Australia, reflecting the significance of this outcome. This result demonstrates the strength of Flinders’ HDR cohort and supervisory environment, and contributes positively to the University’s research training profile.
