Managing Your Research Data: New Data Management Plan Guide Now Available

Effective research data management is an essential part of high-quality research practice and is increasingly expected by funders, institutions, and publishers. At Flinders, Data Management Plans (DMPs) are a key tool in supporting researchers, including HDR students and their supervisors, to plan, manage, and safeguard research data throughout the research lifecycle.

What is a Data Management Plan?

A Data Management Plan (DMP) is a structured document that outlines how research data will be:

  • created and collected
  • organised, stored, and secured
  • shared and retained
  • managed in line with ethical, legal, and institutional requirements

Developing a DMP early in your research helps ensure your data is well-managed, reproducible, and compliant with University and external expectations. HDR students are asked questions about their DMP in their annual Milestones.

New DMP Tool User Guide

The University Library recently published a revised DMP Tool User Guide to support researchers in preparing high-quality, consistent data management plans using the institutional DMP tool.

Key features of the updated guide include:

  • Clear, step-by-step guidance on completing a DMP
  • Alignment with current research data management requirements
  • Improved consistency in data management practices across disciplines and Colleges
  • Support for meeting institutional, ethical, and compliance expectations.

Why This Matters

Developing a robust DMP:

  • supports responsible research practice
  • reduces risk of data loss or non-compliance
  • enhances collaboration and data sharing opportunities
  • strengthens the overall quality and impact of your research

Where to Find Support

HDR students and supervisors are encouraged to explore the Library’s research data management resources, including guidance on developing DMPs and managing research data effectively. Need more help, submit a ServiceOne Library research query.
